Main idea has got to be ane of the nigh difficult reading skills to teach.
Simply it'soh, so important.
We want our readers to exist able to sympathize the "big idea" from a text.
What do they need to call up?
What is essential and what is nonessential?
Main idea is definitely a tricky concept to teach, and then I made these main thought task cards for members of The Measured Mom Plus. And today I'k sharing the file with you … for free!
The file comes with 24 task cards. Each card has an engaging passage almost a particular animate being.
When I used the activeness with my second grader, we used the simpler answer canvass.
Afterward reading each task card, he chose the main idea from the three choices on the answer sheet.
I helped him meet that, sometimes, the main idea is direct stated in the paragraph.
Other times, nosotros need to infer the main idea based on the details.
My quaternary grader (who informed me that he has a difficult time with master idea), had the more difficult task. Instead of choosing from a list of main ideas, he had to write them on his own.
We worked on this together, and finding the chief idea wasn't easy for him.
He often came up with a principal idea that was much also specific. Together we looked at the sentences in the paragraph to make certain they all supported his principal idea. If not, we knew nosotros needed something different.
Here are some tips for teaching main thought:
- Reminder your learners that they are looking for the "big thought" that the text is near.
- The details should bespeak to the primary idea. After a learner has named the main thought (whether correct or incorrect), enquire more questions. "What are the details which support that chief thought?"
- Sometimes learners can get likewise specific with the main idea; aid them see that a main idea is more of a general argument.
- Teach your learners that the principal thoughtmay or may not exist explicitly stated as a topic judgement. This sentence can be anywhere within the paragraph.
- When looking for the main idea, learners tin can inquire themselves:
- What's of import here?
- What big idea does the author desire me to remember?
- What is the most important point most the topic?
